Some writing advice by Kurt Vonnegut Jr

Posted by giveaphuk on April 16, 2007

Taken from blog they must need bears via boingboing but worthy of being distributed on my blog, as I find Kurt’s writing style to be amazing.

Some writing advice by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. on the subject of short stories, from Bagombo Snuff Box:

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.*

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

Storm in US over chocolate Jesus

Posted by giveaphuk on March 30, 2007

from BBC world news, an interesting artwork, which has received much criticism from religious groups.

An excerpt from this article…

A New York gallery has angered a US Catholic group with its decision to exhibit a milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ.
The six-foot (1.8m) sculpture, entitled “My Sweet Lord”, depicts Jesus Christ naked on the cross. Catholic League head Bill Donohue called it “one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever”.

now i’m actually a bit jealous that my work has never received such criticism, although am still going to try my hardest!

how to win candy bar competition prizes

Posted by giveaphuk on March 23, 2007

ok, so maybe I’m cutting myself short by posting this, but here is a surefire way to win certain candy bar competitions.. I was told this by a guy @ work who was, in turn educated by his girlfriend on how to do this.. They actually won not one, but two ipods from following this theory & I also won a PSP by doing the same thing.

1) The competitions are generally about entering via SMS & winning a prize ‘every hour’
2) you have to eat alot of candy &/or drink soft drink depending on whose offering. (eg. for my psp i had about 12 candy bar wrappers)
3) after you have consumed alot of product, choose a really random time (eg. I chose Australia vs. Italy world cup football match) when you think not alot of people will be thinking of entering such competitions. Then wait until it strikes the hour..
4) enter all your chances until you run out of wrappers, you don’t have to be fast about it, just steady, say one every two – 5 minutes (for psp i did about 8 SMS entries until i got a msg back saying i’d won!), so basically with a little luck you’ll get this same message before you run out of wrappers.
5) chose the prize carefully (eg. with my friends ipod, they we’re offered either an ipod or $500 cash, my friend figured most ppl would go for the cash), so that odds are stacked in your favour. There is a new one starting in Australia, where we get to chose from 1) $1000 2) sony laptop or 3) PSP/PS3 combo.. Seeing PS3’s are crap, & selling like hotcakes NOT! i will be punting on this piece of techno gaming junk, that way i can flog it off on ebay & get myself a WII.

I’d be interested to know if these kinds of competitions are global, & if anybody else has had such success.

how NOT to backup data

Posted by giveaphuk on March 23, 2007

ok, so here is a serious assumption on my part, which I’m sure many others have also encountered.

Being a geek for many years has left me with about 5 computers, all of various ages, all containing both my own & clients artwork. I recently decided to go Zen on my room, & clear out all this old equipment, so I purchased a 240gig external HDD & spent many hours backing up my data from all these machines, into this one convenient location.

It never occurred to me that centralizing data backups to one source is inviting disaster (IE:// a load of eggs in one basket). Last nite, I accidentally tripped on the HDD power cable & this external HDD went flying off my table, where it fell to the floor with a big THUNK! Now when i plug it in, it whirs & makes a loud click, a sure sign that this has been destroyed.. No computer, be it mac, pc or Linux will now recognize this drive (even in the bios!).

The one thing i am thankful for is the fact that I still have all these old machines, & haven’t as yet reformatted the drives, as i was planning to do!! Failing this I would have had to spend Hundreds of Dollars getting a data recovery service to attempt to fix my problem.

Now I am going to have to spend many hours again, moving all this data back onto a new external HDD, but this time I am going to purchase another HDD, which i am going to pack away very safely, as my ultimate secure backup!

Sure I could have backed it all up to DVD also, but last time i did that, years later, when requiring some old data, I opened my cd case to discover these DVD’s had suffered a bad case of Techno Rot, thus rendering all data useless!

So a word to the wise, from my stressful experience, backup essential data MANY TIMES, & in MANY DIFFERENT WAYS!
